Introduction

Eyelid surgery, also called blepharoplasty, is a procedure that refreshes the area around your eyes by removing or repositioning excess skin and fat. It can smooth droopy upper lids, reduce under-eye bags, and soften a tired or heavy look. In some cases, it can also improve your field of vision when sagging skin blocks the eyes.

Procedure

Eyelid surgery is usually done under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia. Fine incisions are placed in the natural creases of the upper eyelids and just below the lashes or inside the lower eyelids. Through these openings, excess skin, muscle, and fat are carefully adjusted or removed. The goal is to create a natural, rested appearance that fits your facial features, without changing your unique expression. At the end of the procedure, the incisions are closed with delicate sutures and cooled gently to limit swelling.

Aftercare & Recovery

After surgery, you can expect some swelling, bruising, and a feeling of tightness around the eyes. These are normal and usually improve within 1–2 weeks. You’ll need to keep your head elevated, use prescribed eye drops or ointment, and follow your surgeon’s instructions about cold compresses and activity limits. Most patients return to light daily activities after about a week, but subtle healing and refinement of the eyelids can continue for several months.
